On 1 May 2021, the Asia-Pacific Convention on the Recognition of Qualifications in Higher Education, known as the Tokyo Convention will enter into force in Armenia. As the third country to ratify so far in 2021 and the 12th State Party overall, Armenia’s ratification marks another key milestone for Asia and the Pacific towards promoting fair and transparent recognition of qualifications throughout the region.

The Armenian National Information Center for Academic Recognition and Mobility (ARMENIC) confirmed its commitment on behalf of the Government of the Republic of Armenia: “No doubt, that accession to the Tokyo Convention is an important development for Armenia and will facilitate cross-regional cooperation in education and science-based on mutual trust. Moreover, ARMENIC will the join Asia-Pacific Network of National Information Centres (APNNIC), which is the official network of recognition authorities and NICs in the region.” On behalf of the Secretariat of the Tokyo Convention Committee at UNESCO Bangkok, Libing Wang elaborated on the importance of a continued focus on implementation going forward: “Armenia’s ratification comes as the result of a strong momentum to promote transparency, comparability and compatibility among different higher education systems in the region and beyond. The increasing number of ratifications and strong network of NICs are surely bringing us closer to shared policies and practices on recognition and mobility in the years to come.”
